Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island are all a short day trip away from the Traverse City area, and with their winding roads of evergreen and white birch trees, and quiet lakes brimming with trout offer a contrast in terrain and vegetation from Lower Michigan.
